Anna Rajam Malhotra IAS, 1st female IAS officer of India

Anna Rajam Malhotra IAS, 1st female IAS officer of India, is a true embodiment of inspiration and determination. Not only did she become the first woman IAS officer, but she also opened up the pathway for millions of women who once could not even imagine of even preparation for the UPSC CSE.

Education

Anna Rajam Malhotra was born in 1927 in Kerala. She did her schooling in Calicut and her bachelor’s degree from Malabar Christian College in Calicut. In 1949, she obtained her master’s in English literature from the University of Madras.

Anna Rajam Malhotra IAS Officer

Anna Rajam Malhotra IAS cleared the Indian Civil Services Exam in 1950 and joined the services as the first female IAS officer in 1951. She married Ram Narain Malhotra also an IAS officer of the same 1951 batch.

She served in various positions in the Madras State. She also held several important positions in the Government of India including Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Education and Culture.

After retirement from services, she served as a director of Hotel Leela Venture Ltd.

She was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1989. A year later in 1990, her husband and retired IAS officer Ram Narain Malhotra also received the Padma Bhushan award. She died at the age of 91 in September 2018.
