Kanchan Verma IAS Biography

Kanchan Verma was born in a middle-class family on 3 September 1977 in Etah, Uttar Pradesh. Kanchan’s father was a teacher. She did her schooling from Saraswati Vidya Mandir in Etah. She did her graduation and post-graduation (M.A. Sociology) from Dayalbagh Educational Institute in Agra. Thenafter she also did a B.Ed. from the same institute. in 2017 she went to Kings College in London to pursue an MSc (Public Policies & Management).

Civil Services Exam, 2004: Kanchan Verma cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2004. She joined as an IAS (Indian Administrative Services) officer of the 2005 batch, after training at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie. She was allotted the Uttar Pradesh cadre.

Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration for the year 2013-14

While being posted as District Magistrate and Collector of Fatehpur Kanchan Verma did an exemplary work. With her dire efforts she was successfully able to revive the dried Thithora lake and Sasur Khaderi river in Fatehpur district.

Sasur Khaderi I and II rivers originate from Thithaura lake spread over seven hectares. With the passage of time the lake had dried up. The river was also on the verge of extinction. The situation had become such that people had even started farming in the river bed. This river was about 46 km long. District Magistrate (DM) Kanchan Verma had got 38 km of excavation done. As a result, the lake also returned to its old form and the river started flowing in a width ranging from 12 to 45 meters.

Additionally, due to this, laborers working under MNREGA scheme also got work. The initiative was also listed in ‘Best MNREGS Practices’ by th e Department of Rural Development, Government of India.

For reviving the long dead Sasur Kahderi-2 Rivulet and its origin Thithora Lake, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave Kanchan Verma Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration for the year 2013-14 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on April 21, 2015.

Commonwealth Award for Public Administration and Management Innovations Award – 2016

Kanchan Verma IAS also received the Commonwealth Award for Public Administration and Management Innovations Award – 2016 for the “Revival of the Glorious Lake and River” project in Mirzapur.

Teaches Maths and English to Children

Kanchan Verma IAS while she was posted as District magistrate of Mirzapur, she took keen interest in improving the education system of the district. After inspecting the schools, she herself became a teacher and went to teach Maths and English to the children.
